El Derecho A Sentirse Sexy | The Right To Feel Sexy

Esta semana estuve viendo un discurso de la actriz Cate Blanchett acerca del derecho que tenemos las mujeres a vernos sexy, sin disculpas ni vergüenzas. Ella dijo: "Que nos guste vestir sexy no significa que queremos follar contigo", lo cual me hizo reflexionar mucho acerca de cómo a veces negamos nuestros deseos de sentirnos sexy porque nos enseñaron a muchas que al vernos así, podríamos desatar reacciones negativas en el sexo opuesto.

Sé que lo decían para protegernos, pero eso nos creó muchos conflictos de identidad y la relación con nuestros cuerpos es complicada en gran parte debido a esto. Aún en este siglo se tiene la concepción de que si una mujer es sexy es porque no tiene nada más que ofrecer, o que es una invitación para que le digan todo lo que quieran en la calle, porque "quién la manda a salir así".

Muchas veces me he sentido avergonzada de mis curvas naturales, lo cual ha limitado de decisiones de estilo y me he resistido a comprarme algo por miedo a verme vulgar, sabiendo que me encanta. Quiero cada vez aceptar más mi cuerpo y mejorar mi relación con él, superando tantos sentimientos encontrados hacia él que fueron sembrados en mi niñez. Entendiendo ahora que nuestro cuerpo debe darnos más poder, al contrario de quitárnoslo, sin importar la forma o talla que tenga.

Los dejo con otra frase memorable del discurso de la actriz: "Para mí, los verdaderos iconos de estilo —y creo que esta noche el tema importa— son las mujeres que siempre han sido ellas mismas sin disculparse, aquellas que llevan integradas su apariencia física y su estética de forma involuntaria. Mujeres que saben que su imagen no es lo que ellas son en realidad, sino solo una extensión de ellas mismas, se trata de que las mujeres se sientan libres de vestir lo que quieran cuando quieran y como quieran".

En interiorizar esto, radica verdaderamente el sentirse sexy.

This week I was watching Cate Blanchett's speech on the right women have to feel sexy, without shame or apologies. She said: "Looking sexy doesn't mean we want to f*ck you", which made reflect about how sometimes we deny ourselves from feeling sexy, because many of us were taught that looking like this could unchained negative reactions from the opposite sex.

I know they were trying to protect us, but it created a lot of identity conflicts within us, and the relationship we have with our bodies is also complicated because of that. Still in this century, it is believed that if a woman is sexy she has nothing else to offer, or that it is an invitation to be catcalled in the street, since "she's basically asking for it".

Countless times I have felt ashamed of my natural curves, limiting my style options, and resisting to buy something I love by fear of looking vulgar and tasteless. That is why I want to accept my body more and more and improve how I feel about it, getting over this love-hate relationship that started when I was very young. Knowing that our body is supposed to make us more powerful, not less, no matter its shape or size.

I leave you with another memorable phrase from the actress's speech: "For me, the true icons of style are always those women who’ve been utterly themselves without apology, whose physical presence and their aesthetic is really integrated in a non self-conscious way into part of who they are, and women who know how they look is not all of who they are, but just an extension of that. It’s about women who feel free to wear what they want when they want and how they want to wear it".

In embracing this, truly lies what it means to be sexy.
