The Many Faces Of Ethical Fashion | Las Muchas Caras De La Moda Ética

When we usually think the phrase "ethical fashion", we immediately think about organic, sustainable fabrics, right? And it is true, part of ethical fashion consists in using materials that have been produced in an eco-friendly way. However, it is so much more than that, and if we knew more tools to have a greener closet, we would understand that little efforts can help a long way, which would motivate us even more to dig deeper in this path. When I saw sustainable fashion only from the organic textiles point of view, I would give up without even trying because that kind of products are relatively scarce and often, quite expensive.

My outfit today is absolutely ethical, and from many points of view (on each picture you would find the description):

Usualmente cuando se nos viene a la mente la frase "moda ética", inmediatamente nos imaginamos telas orgánicas y sostenibles, ¿verdad? Y es cierto, parte de la moda ética consiste en usar materiales que hayan sido producidos de forma amigable con el medio ambiente. Sin embargo, es mucho más que esto y si conocemos más herramientas para tener un closet sostenible, entendemos que esfuerzos pequeños pueden ayudar muchísimo, lo cual nos motiva más para adentrarnos en este camino. Y es que cuando yo veía a la moda sostenible sólo desde el punto de vista de telas orgánicas, me daba por vencida sin siquiera empezar porque este tipo de productos son relativamente escasos y en muchas ocasiones, sus precios son altos.

Mi outfit de hoy es totalmente ético y desde muchos puntos de vista (en cada foto encontrarás la descripción de cada prenda):

Sandals by Birkenstock. These are traditionally made in Germany and the materials used are latex, cork, and jute. The cork is repurposed from the ones thrown away by wineries, and the latex is also a renewable resource, as the jute. |

Sandalias de Birkenstock. Son tradicionalmente hechas en Alemania y los recursos que utilizan son latex, corcho y yute. El corcho utilizado es el que queda después añejar los vinos y el latex también es un recurso renovable junto con el yute.

Jeans by Reformation. These are the most complete piece, in terms of ethicality. It's made in the U.S from sustainable cotton, and the brand is absolutely transparent regarding its practices. Which means, that I can tell you with absolute certainty that making these jeans they saved: 28 lbs. of carbon dioxide, 1.267 gallons of water (cotton is one of the materials that mosts consumes water for its harvesting), and 1.5 lbs. of wastes. |

Jeans de Reformation. Esta es la pieza más completa en cuanto a sostenibilidad y ética. Es hecho en Estados Unidos de algodón sostenible y la marca es absolutamente transparente en cuando a sus prácticas. Por tanto, les puedo decir con certeza que en su confección se ahorraron: 28 libras de dióxido de carbono, 1,267 galones de agua (el algodón es uno de los materiales que más consume agua para su producción) y 1,5 libras de desperdicios.

Beaded bag by Ganni. The beaded bag is made in India, and it is a climate compensating clothing. Which means that the brand offset most of the environmental impact caused by the manufacturing of the bag. |

Bolso tejido de Ganni. Este bolso bordado es hecho en India y está etiquetado como "climate compensating clothing" (prenda que compensa el clima). Esto significa que la marca contrarrestó gran parte el impacto ambiental que generó la confección de este bolso.

Sunglasses by Chimi Eyewear. They are from an independent brand based in Stockholm that produces its products in Italy. Hence, the workers are being paid fairly, and this limits their production capacity, not being able to mass-produce anything.|

Gafas de sol de Chimi Eyewear. Son de una marca independiente de Estocolmo que hace sus productos en Italia. Por ende, su mano de obra tiene pagos justos y beneficios, lo cual limita su capacidad de producción, no siendo posible producir en masa.

Top by Amur. It is made in China. As I have mentioned in previous posts, labor rights are very important when considering a garment's sustainability, and I don't think this brand has that component. However, it is made in 100% organic cotton. |

Blusa de Amur. Es hecha en China. Como he mencionado en otro posts, para mi es muy importante las condiciones laborales de los trabajadores como un componente clave de la moda ética y esta pieza no creo que la cumpla. Sin embargo, es hecha en 100% algodón orgánico.

Cuff by Alejandra Castro. It's in rose quartz and handmade in Colombia, using hypoallergenic materials. Watch by Chanel. I never take it off and it is vintage. Since it was "previously loved" and I wear it soooo much, I'm reducing its carbon footprint significantly. |

Brazalete de Alejandra Castro. Es de cuarzo rosado y hecho a mano en Colombia, usando materiales hipoalergénicos. Reloj de Chanel. Nunca me lo quito y es vintage. Cuando lo tuve ya había sido amado por alguien previamente y como le doy tanto uso, reduzco significativamente su huella de carbono.

Sunglasses cord by Soul Sisters. It is from a woman entrepreneur in the Netherlands that is starting her company, and she makes by all the pieces by hand in her country. |

Cordón para las gafas de Soul Sisters. Son de una mujer empresaria en Holanda que apenas está empezando su empresa y hace todos los productos a mano en su país.

When we purposely decide to live a more sustainable life, we can see that is not hard to find ethical components to make more mindful shopping decisions, which can improve the work quality of millions of workers, and the environment.
